Boulle Nun

Our Lady of Czestochowa
Our Lady of Czestochowa

Samuel de Champlain (1576-1635), the "Father of New France," was the discoverer of Canada and the founder of Quebec (1608). He wrote a few books in which descriptions of his travels and discoveries can be found. One of the Canadian lakes is named after him. His wife, Helen Boulle, a fervent convert, worked with him on converting the Indians; she learned the language of the Algonquins and taught them the catechism. After her husband's death, she joined the Ursuline Order of nuns. Champlain named St. Helen Island in Montreal in honor of her.
