| Swiftwater Safety & Rescue for AR & Competitive Paddlers |

This course will focus on equipping AR and canoe racers with a basic knowledge of swiftwater safety and rescue. The aim is to allow competitors to understand how rivers work, recognise features and cope with hazards so as to avoid unnecessary risk to themselves and their teammates and fellow paddlers. In addition, they will be equipped with some basic rescue techniques so that should problems arise, they will be equipped to deal with them. Finally, paddling techniques and racing tips for various craft & conditions will be touched on. The information will be presented in both theory and practical format and a course booklet will be provided. A recommended reading list will also be supplied. Successful candidates will receive a certificate from the African Paddling Association. Candidates are also welcome to join the APA but this is not mandatory. Topics covered will include the following; · Swiftwater Features & hazards · Reading the river and picking the best line · Paddling strokes · Wading techniques · Basic Swiftwater rescue techniques including ropework · Racing tips & techniques Courses are held on demand and costs depend on number of trainees and course venue.
